Damien Patrick Miller’s career is a testament to his dedication and impact. Hailing from the Gangulu people in Central Queensland, Miller has achieved remarkable milestones in diplomacy and Indigenous representation.
Miller’s academic excellence was recognized when he became the Aboriginal Scholar of the Year in 1993. He graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 1998, later adding a Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University.
While studying law, Miller worked at a commercial law firm and joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as an Indigenous Cadet in 1995. He joined DFAT full-time after graduating and served in various roles, including postings in Malaysia and Germany.
In 2013, Miller made history as the first Indigenous Australian appointed as the Ambassador of Australia to Denmark, with accreditation to Iceland and Norway. He emphasised the importance of diversity and inclusivity within DFAT and highlighted the representation of Indigenous staff members.
