As the vibrant tapestry of National Reconciliation Week approaches (27 May to 3 June 2024), the Queensland Government has opened the door to a unique opportunity for community-driven events. Minister for Treaty, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Minister for Communities, and Minister for the Arts, The Honourable Leeanne Enoch, announced a grant initiative aimed at fostering unity and understanding.

The Celebrating Reconciliation Grants Program invites Queenslanders to apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to organize events that bring communities together in celebration of National Reconciliation Week. This year’s program marks an increase in funding, offering a total of $200,000 to support up to 32 events across the state.

Since its inception in 2018, the Celebrating Reconciliation Grants Program has played a pivotal role in supporting 198 events and activities, channeling $689,000 in grant funding to communities across Queensland. These initiatives have ranged from cooking demonstrations and community concerts to touch footy matches and tree planting ceremonies.

Queenslanders keen on promoting reconciliation are encouraged to seize this opportunity to create events that embrace shared histories, cultures, and achievements. The grants are designed to facilitate truth-telling, healing, trust, and respectful relationships between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and non-Indigenous Queenslanders. Additionally, they aim to raise awareness of National Reconciliation Week, promote inclusion, and offer opportunities for communities to learn, share, and grow.

Key Criteria for Grant Applications:

Promoting Truth-Telling and Healing:

  • Events should contribute to truth-telling, healing, trust, and the development of respectful relationships between communities.

Promoting Inclusion:

  • Strengthen relationships between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and non-Indigenous Queenslanders through inclusive and engaging activities.

Raising Awareness:

  • Increase community awareness of National Reconciliation Week and its significance.

Offering Learning Opportunities:

  • Provide community members with opportunities to learn, share, and grow. This could involve sharing stories, showcasing local histories, arts, and cultural activities.

Applications for the 2024 Celebrating Reconciliation Grants are currently open and will close at midday on Monday, 22 January 2024. Interested parties can find more information, including eligibility criteria, on the official website: www.qld.gov.au/recgrants.

Quoting Minister Leeanne Enoch, she emphasised that National Reconciliation Week offers a chance for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, fostering a collective commitment to reconciliation. The grant program aims to support small and large events alike, providing funding to up to 32 initiatives during or around National Reconciliation Week in 2024.

The Queensland Government’s commitment to reconciliation is reflected not only in financial support but also in the acknowledgment of past recipients. Events organised with the aid of Celebrating Reconciliation Grants have showcased the links between Indigenous culture and sports, encouraged recognition of First Nations cultures, and facilitated a strong sense of community and reconciliation.

As Queenslanders prepare to celebrate National Reconciliation Week, the Celebrating Reconciliation Grants Program stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to fostering unity, understanding, and respect among communities. Seize this opportunity to contribute to a meaningful and inclusive celebration of Australia’s diverse cultural heritage.
